Health Insurance Germany -
How it works and what's important to know

All residents of Germany are required to have health insurance.

Health insurance is paid monthly, and it covers the costs of necessary medical care when you need it. This includes doctor visits, medical treatments, surgeries, therapies, and prescribed medications.

Germany has two types of health insurance systems:

  • Public Health Insurance
This system is run by non-profit health insurance funds. The cost is calculated as a percentage of your income. Coverage and costs are fairly consistent across all public health insurers.

  • Private Health Insurance
Private health insurance is provided by for-profit companies. The cost is determined by your age and health condition at the time of enrollment. Private insurance offers more customizable coverage options, and prices can vary significantly.

Both systems provide excellent healthcare. The right choice depends on your personal situation, though most residents are only eligible for public health insurance.

Your Opportunities

As an employee, your choices are influenced by your income. It’s not your employer who determines which insurance you can choose. Even if you lose your job, your health insurance coverage remains intact.

If your annual income is below 73,800€, you are limited to public health insurance options.

Additional Information

Who Can Choose Private Insurance?

Only certain groups, such as self-employed individuals, freelancers, and employees earning above a specific income threshold, are eligible to opt for private health insurance.

Why Understanding the System Matters

Making the right health insurance decision is crucial as it can have long-term implications for your healthcare and finances. For example, switching from public to private insurance is not always reversible.

Supplemental Insurance Options

Even if you’re covered by public health insurance, you can consider supplemental private insurance to access additional benefits, like dental care or alternative therapies.
